Welcome to Bibb County and Middle Georgia! Almost 25,000 children are served every day in Bibb County School District, a system devoted to working for the Achievement and Performance for Every Child in Every Classroom in Every School. The mission taken on by students, faculty, and administrators "is to provide a high quality education for all Bibb County students in a safe and comfortable environment, and to make use of all human and technological resources in preparing graduates for post-high school objectives."
In an effort to improve student achievement, the Bibb County School District has worked with the Georgia Department of Education to implement No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 standards and expectations. Since the law passed, the system scores have been on the rise. On Georgia’s Criterion Referenced Competency Tests, 3rd graders meeting or exceeding standards on the Reading portion have increase 8%, and 5th graders meeting or exceeding standards on the Mathematics portion have increased 20%.
A school making Adequate Yearly Progress - the standard set under NCLB based on several factors including CRCT scores – three or more years in a row earns the distinction of being a Distinguished School. At the end of the 2005-2006 school year, there were 21 in Bibb County Public Schools, an increase from four just two years prior.
For 11th graders taking the Georgia High School Graduation Test for the first time, scores continue to improve with 97% meeting expectations in Language Arts and 91% meeting expectations in Mathematics.
The importance of education and taking a rigorous course load is also being effectively communicated to the students, with more students taking Advanced Placement Courses. An increase in participation from 141 students in 2000 to 491 in 2006 shows a trend to more rigors at the high school level.
The Bibb County School District has been recognized at the state and national levels for its hard work and efforts. Superintendent Sharon Patterson was named Georgia’s Superintendent of the Year and was one of the top four finalists for National Superintendent of the Year.
As student achievement has increased, the Macon/Bibb County Community has shown its support of the efforts to educate children. This past year, the system went to the voters asking for a second Education Special Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) to continue our Capital Improvement Program.
Under the first ESPLOST, 11 new schools and many classroom additions were built. During this next phase of improvements, Central and Southwest High Schools will be rebuilt, a new high school will be built on Forsyth Road, and renovations will be started at Northeast High School. Four other schools will receive classroom additions; 10 schools will receive renovations; athletic facilities at middle and high school levels will be upgraded; extensive amounts of instructional technology will be installed across the district; and new busses and other vehicles for transportation, maintenance, delivery, and security will be purchased.
Working together with the community, the Bibb County School District can continue to work towards Achievement and Performance for Every Child in Every Classroom in Every School.
