English Speakers of Other Languages
Bibb County's ESOL Program provides transitional language instruction to students who have a primary or home language other than English, and who, by definition, either cannot function independently in the regular school program or whose reading comprehension falls below the 40th percentile on a standardized test of reading comprehension for native speakers of English.
ESOL instruction is designed to foster the development of English language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The program includes many lessons on American cultural concepts for those students who are encountering American holidays and other cultural events for the first time.
The program seeks to promote awareness of the great variety of world cultures represented by our students, as well as a positive self-concept as a means of accelerating the ESOL student’s effective participation in an English-speaking society.
The lead teachers for the ESOL program are Karen Grogan (kgrogan.carter@bibb.k12.ga.us) and Barbara Leggett-Hughes (bleggett.rutlandms@bibb.k12.ga.us).
